About Amberley School Community Action Group

Amberley State School was 145 years old last year. The State Government intends to close it at the end of 2008 due to the expansion of the Amberley Defence Base. The Commonwealth Government owns all of the surrounding land and plans to enclose the School within the perimeter of the Base by mid 2009.
Our school has 231 students enrolled in a happy country atmosphere.
The Amberley School Community Action Group is a small group of parents and interested parties who met regularly and planned thoughtfully to create a plan to influence the Queensland State Government and the Australian Commonwealth Government. The passionate leaders of this little group travelled to QLD parliament and to the Commonwealth parliament to ensure their message was heard at the highest levels. Petitions, media releases, letters to the editor of local newspapers, many newspaper articles were printed about the school, regular newsletters to keep everyone informed, letter box drops, banners on the highway, letter writing campaigns, this web site and various other tools were used to make our group heard.
Thank you for helping us to pressure the State and Federal Government to cooperate and relocate Amberley State School to a suitable local site so that our children can maintain their friendships, and the school atmosphere can continue.
UNFORTUNATELY, more than seven months after the Federal Government’s announcement to pay the State Government $26.8 million to relocate Amberley State School, the State Government REFUSES to make a decision and announcement about the new location of Amberley School.
Apparently only the Federal Government is capable of putting the children first. Mr Welford appears to be more concerned about political pork barrelling of local labour electorates.
